"YA GUEY" the Ultimate Central American Surf Trip

"YA GUEY!" A Costa Rican Surf Adventure of a Lifetime

“!YA GUEY!” is a story about a group of young guys and gals as they travel the entire Pacific Coast of Costa Rica in search of the best waves the country has to offer. Our entire team is featured as we embark on the ultimate Central American surf trip, enjoying the sights and sounds along the way.

We made stops in the Guanacaste region for a code red January swell, then headed further south for the desolate yet intimidating beaches of Hermosa, and finally ending things off in a secret small peninsula on the southern tip of the country with only one way in and one way out. For the sake of the locals and preserving the raw, untouched coastline and community, we omit this final location.

The further south we traveled, the more remote things became. The group thinned out, the waves became harder to reach and harder to film, and the wildlife took over attention. My biggest lesson during this surf trip was that the deeper you go, the more grounded you become. At the very end it was just me and my filmer, scoring all alone in the wild. During those final weeks I’d take my point and shoot camera into the jungle to capture the wildlife and their initial reactions to seeing a foreign creature in their home. When the tides were right, I spent my time in the water. Every wave was mine, which was subtlety symbolized in the ending track by the Mystic Braves titled “To Myself.”

Filmed by Hank and Daphne on Sony A7 series and DJI Mavic 3, edited and produced by Beau.
